NEW YORK, 23 November 2024<\/strong> \u2014 The Philippine Consulate General in New York, in collaboration with The Filipino School of New York & New Jersey and Helping Stars Foundation, successfully hosted a Parol-Making Workshop at the Philippine Center. Held in celebration of November as Children\u2019s Month and Filipino Values Month, the event was attended by over 50 Filipino families who came together to honor Filipino traditions and values through the art of parol-making.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The program began with a presentation by Ms. Venessa Manzano of The Filipino School of New York and New Jersey, who discussed the history and cultural significance of the parol. This was followed by a book reading of Christina Bryner\u2019s A Filipino Christmas Wish by Ms. Jane Orendain. During the workshop, families created their own parols with the guidance of Helping Stars Foundation artisans and facilitators.<\/span><\/p>

In her remarks, Vice Consul Cathe Ryne Denice S. Aguilar underscored the significance of the event\u2019s alignment with November\u2019s observances, saying, \u201cThis event is particularly meaningful as it aligns with two important observances this November: Children\u2019s Month and Filipino Values Month. These observances remind us to nurture our children while celebrating the Filipino values of hope, family, and community. The parol reminds us that even in the darkest of times, we Filipinos shine with hope, faith, and joy. It is a light that not only brightens our homes during Christmas but also binds us as a community, carrying our values wherever we may be.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Participants shared their enthusiasm for the event. One child said, \u201cThis was my first time creating a parol, and doing it with my parents made it all the more meaningful. I can\u2019t wait to bring my parol home and display it for the Christmas holidays.\u201d A parent also remarked, \u201cI wanted my child to experience making a parol and understand its significance, so he never forgets his Filipino roots. This workshop was such a meaningful way to reconnect with our culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Some of the parols crafted during the workshop will be displayed at the Philippine Center for the entire month of December as decorations for the Consulate\u2019s Simbang Gabi sa Konsulado celebrations which will be held from 5 to 13 December.
