NEW YORK CITY, 04 August 2025 \u2013<\/strong> The Philippine Consulate General in New York joined Historic Saranac Lake, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and architecture of the region, in commemorating the 81st<\/sup> death anniversary of President Manuel L. Quezon, with a ceremony held on 01 August 2025 at the Trudeau Building in Saranac Lake, New York.<\/span><\/p>

The commemoration was attended by President Quezon\u2019s grandchildren, Aurora Quezon Avance\u00f1a and Manuel Quezon Avance\u00f1a, who traveled to Saranac Lake for the first time and were the first members of the family to visit Saranac Lake since their grandfather\u2019s passing in 1944. They expressed their gratitude to Historic Saranac Lake for providing the opportunity to meet others who value President Quezon\u2019s place in Philippine\u2011American history.<\/span><\/p>

Consul General Senen T. Mangalile led the ceremony together with Historic Saranac Lake Executive Director Amy Catania; members of the organization\u2019s board; Sol Kapunan, President of Kalayaan 1521 in Albany; as well as members of the Filipino community in Saranac Lake and the Adirondacks.<\/span><\/p>

In his remarks, Consul General Mangalile said that the Philippines owes a lot to President Quezon\u2019s leadership during the infancy of the Commonwealth, including the establishment of a national language and other institutions that enabled the country to assert its identity as a rightful member of the community of nations. \u201cIt is therefore fitting to commemorate his fruitful life at the very place where it ended, and for that we thank Historic Saranac Lake for being open to the idea,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>

Executive Director Amy Catania, for her part, highlighted the importance of remembering Quezon\u2019s time in Saranac Lake, noting that history opens doors through which people can look to the past for inspiration in the present and for building bridges of understanding and mutual respect across communities and nations.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Founded in 1980, Historic Saranac Lake counts among its projects the stewardship of the Trudeau Building, once the site of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau\u2019s pioneering tuberculosis sanatorium and later the final residence of President Quezon during his exile in the United States.<\/span><\/p>

This was the second such event held in Saranac Lake, following last year\u2019s 80th<\/sup> death anniversary commemoration. It also coincided with the Philippines\u2019 observance of August as National Language Month and National History Month.<\/span><\/p>

Remembered as the Father of the National Language<\/em>, President Quezon\u2019s legacy continues to shape the country\u2019s identity and historical consciousness.
