Ang Huling Katipunero – Macario Sakay documentary explores the legacy of Macario Sakay, the last Filipino general to resist American colonization in the early 20th century. Unlike many who surrendered or joined forces with the colonizers, Sakay continued his fight in Luzon’s mountains, but was branded a “tulisan” or bandit, a label that haunted his descendants. Despite this negative portrayal, Sakay’s legacy is being reevaluated, as shown by the erection of his statue in Tondo, Manila—raising questions about who is celebrated as heroes in Philippine history.
Meanwhile, the Hinabing Pag-asa documentary examines the lingering impact of the Marawi siege in Southern Philippines, two years after the conflict. While the city slowly rebuilds, preserving Maranao traditions like weaving remains a significant challenge, especially for Muslimah, who lost her heir. Despite these difficulties, women in an evacuation center have revived this craft, weaving with hope for Marawi’s cultural revival. Their resilience is poignantly captured in this episode.
These screenings are presented in partnership with Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative of New York University and is proudly supported by GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV, and GMA News TV.
