On 17 May, Consul General Senen T. Mangalile proudly welcomed Samantha Kyle Catantan, a Filipina fencer representing the country at the 2024 Summer Olympics, to the Philippine Center in New York City.Ms. Catantan recently qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics during the Asia-Oceania Zonal Olympic Qualifier held at Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, in April 2024. She has made history as the first Filipino fencer to qualify for the Olympics in 32 years and the first woman in the country’s history.During the courtesy call, Ms. Catantan shared her inspiring journey from humble beginnings in free fencing classes offered in her barangay in Quezon City to achieving Olympic status. Mangalile proudly welcomed Megan Althea Obrero Paragua, an 11-year-old Filipino-American chess prodigy and fifth-grade student at Columbia Grammar Preparatory School, to the Philippine Center in New York City. Paragua recently achieved remarkable success at the World Rapid & Blitz Cadet Chess Championship 2024, held from 25 to 29 April in Durres, Albania, where she won back-to-back world titles in the Rapid and Blitz categories for under-12 girls. (Photo by: Nikka Arenal) To celebrate Philippine National Heritage Month, the Philippine Consulate General in New York and Sentro Rizal New York featured “Once Upon the Sun & Sea: Indigenous Stories and Folk Tales from the Philippines” by authors Jo Tiongson-Perez and Denise Orosa at a book reading that drew a diverse crowd of approximately 50 attendees, including 25 children.  Before reading three stories from their book, Tiongson-Perez and Orosa shared how they visited various indigenous communities in the Philippines to curate the eleven stories that they then translated into English. “We wanted to widen the space for children’s stories beyond the Western classics by authors such as Hans Christian Andersen and Brothers Grimm by presenting folk tales from our indigenous communities which children from all backgrounds can also relate with,” said Tiongson-Perez.
