Philippine Consulate General in New York Marks 4th Anniversary of Sentro Rizal with Visit from Rizal Descendant
NEW YORK, 6 January 2026 — The Philippine Consulate General in New York celebrated the 4th anniversary of the inauguration of Sentro Rizal New York by reaffirming its mission to be a premier “house of culture” for the Filipino diaspora in the US Northeast. Established on 06 January 2022, as the 36th Sentro Rizal in the world, the center serves as a vital repository and hub for promoting Philippine arts, language, and heritage in the heart of Manhattan.
To mark the occasion, Consul General Senen T. Mangalile, accompanied by Sentro Rizal New York Manager Consul Anna Guerra and Assistant Nikka Arenal, met at the Philippine Center with Ms. Lisa Bayot, a direct descendant of Dr. Jose Rizal, and Ms. Sandra Medel, a dedicated Filipino community volunteer.
Consul General Mangalile expressed his gratitude to Ms. Sandra Medel for her invaluable contribution in creating the online catalog for the book collections of both the Consulate and Sentro Rizal. This digital modernization ensures that the center’s vast Filipiniana resources—ranging from historical texts to contemporary literature—are now more accessible to the public and the younger generation of Filipino-Americans, preserving the nation’s intellectual legacy in a digital age. The online catalog may now be viewed through this link: https://www.libib.com/u/sentrorizal.
The anniversary celebration also highlighted the specialized advocacies of Ms. Lisa Bayot, a great-granddaughter of Saturnina Rizal, the national hero’s eldest sister. As a co-founder of the MyRizal initiative and founder of the BINHI English Literacy Foundation, Ms. Bayot has dedicated her career to improving literacy and educational empowerment for students. Consul General Mangalile and Ms. Bayot explored future collaborations that align her literacy programs with Sentro Rizal’s vision.
“We are excited to work with Ms. Bayot and our community volunteers to make Sentro Rizal a living, breathing center of culture,” said Consul General Mangalile. “By merging the historical legacy of the Rizal family with modern digital initiatives like Ms. Medel’s catalog, we ensure that our heritage remains a guiding light for Filipinos in New York and beyond.“
