PH Consulate Welcomes CCNY FilAm Students for Cultural Immersion

NEW YORK, 21 February 2025 – The Philippine Consulate General in New York proudly welcomed a dynamic delegation of Filipino-American students from The City College of New York (CCNY) for a cultural immersion activity at the Philippine Center in New York.
These students, who serve as officers and members of the Philippine American Organization (PAO)—a collegiate group dedicated to fostering awareness and appreciation of Filipino culture on campus—are at the forefront of uniting the Filipino-American community. Founded in 1984 by sisters Gaylene and Genalin Santos, PAO has continually evolved, reinforcing its commitment to promoting Filipino heritage and cultural identity. PAO was established to unite Filipino-American students.

Throughout the program, students interacted with Consulate personnel who shared valuable insights into a range of cultural, educational, and community outreach initiatives. These initiatives are designed to instill a strong sense of national identity and cultural pride among Filipinos living abroad. The Consulate also showcased its key accomplishments for 2024, underscoring its enduring commitment to the Filipino diaspora.
In his welcome remarks, Deputy Consul General Adrian Cruz thanked the PAO for promoting activities to make young Filipino Americans aware and appreciative of their Filipino heritage. PAO Vice President Mr. Mhelvin Prangan noted that “they are not just members of their organization but an Ambassador of our homeland. Mr. Prangan encourages everyone to celebrate the shared heritage and work toward building a brighter future for Filipinos.”
In addition to the informative sessions, the students embarked on a tour of the Philippine Center. They visited various offices, including Sentro Rizal New York, where they explored dedicated resources aimed at promoting Filipino culture and heritage among youth in the United States. A particularly memorable highlight of the visit was witnessing the oath-taking ceremony for applicants seeking dual citizenship—a poignant celebration of cultural connection and civic engagement.
This event is part of the Consulate’s ongoing efforts to engage second- and third-generation Filipino-Americans by fostering a deeper connection to their cultural heritage and encouraging them to take an active role in preserving and promoting Filipino traditions and identity. END
