Unlike many who surrendered or joined forces with the colonizers, Sakay continued his fight in Luzon's mountains, but was branded a “tulisan” or bandit, a label that haunted his descendants. Despite this negative portrayal, Sakay's legacy is being reevaluated, as shown by the erection of his statue in Tondo, Manila—raising questions about who is celebrated as heroes in Philippine history.Meanwhile, the Hinabing Pag-asa documentary examines the lingering impact of the Marawi siege in Southern Philippines, two years after the conflict.
