Facilitated by Romae Chanice “Nice” Marquez, founder of Hibla Philippines, participants will learn the basics of setting up a frame loom, understanding warp and weft threads, and crafting their own woven creations. The workshop will also showcase traditional textiles, fostering appreciation for Filipino craftsmanship while supporting the sustainability of local weaving and sewing communities.Held in celebration of Philippine National Arts Month, the event aims to inspire creativity and connection to cultural heritage through the timeless art of weaving.This experience is for beginners, ages 12 and up, interested in exploring the basics of weaving and learning about Filipino culture.Fees: $30 members / $35 nonmembers per person. Strong and Lustrous Online Exhibition In celebration of National Arts Month, the Philippine Consulate General in New York is pleased to share Strong and Lustrous, an online exhibition by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Museo ng Kaalamang Katutubo (MusKKat), highlighting the beauty and significance of abaca.Since pre-Hispanic times, abaca fibers—sourced from Musa textilis, a non-edible banana native to the Philippines—have been hand-loomed into textiles. Despite being called Manila hemp, abaca is not a hemp but the world’s strongest natural fiber. On the Plane Crash in Northeast Philadelphia The Philippine Consulate General in New York, which has jurisdiction over Pennsylvania, is closely monitoring reports of a small plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia near Cottman and Roosevelt Boulevard. The Consulate is in touch with Filipino community organizations and local authorities to determine if any Filipino nationals were among those affected.At this time, there have been no confirmed reports of Filipino nationals impacted by the incident.
