PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL IN NEW YORK HOSTS 10TH FILIPINO COMMUNITY GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The Philippine Consulate General in New York welcomed over 140 leaders of Filipino community organizations from across the US Northeast to its 10th Filipino Community General Assembly at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center on 24 January 2024.
Consul General Senen T. Mangalile extended a warm welcome to all the attendees and expressed gratitude for their steadfast support throughout the past year. “I take your presence as an indication of your continuing commitment to your organization’s partnership with the Philippine Consulate General. Let me reassure you that we value that commitment and we do all we can to make this partnership deeper, broader, and stronger,” said Consul General Mangalile.
The General Assembly featured presentations by the officers of the Consulate and the attaches from the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Tourism. To enrich the discussions, special guest speakers were invited to share information on programs that could benefit the Filipino community.
Ms. Anne del Castillo of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) discussed initiatives supporting non-profit cultural organizations and creative artists in New York City. She highlighted the “Percent for Art Artist Directory,” which identifies artists for potential opportunities related to the commissioning of public artwork. Other programs such as the Cultural Development Fund and the Materials for the Arts were also mentioned.
Ms. Nimfa D. Tinana, representing the Filipino American Legal Defense & Education Fund (FALDEF), shared about the pro-bono legal services offered by their organization. Their services aim to protect the interests of the Filipino-American community, particularly on immigration and civil rights issues.
And from the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS), Ms. Katherine “Kitty” Chan, talked about how Filipino entrepreneurs may access services through NYC Business Solutions Centers and the NYC Business Portal. These services include financial assistance, commercial lease assistance, and online courses on business planning, financing, and management.
The attendees actively engaged with the presentations, reflecting a shared enthusiasm for the issues discussed. Lunch was served after the event. END
