NEW YORK CITY, 11 August 2025 — The Philippine Consulate General in New York (NYPCG) Dragon Boat Team clinched third place in the Asian Invitational Category at the 35th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, a proud achievement in the team’s maiden participation in the annual event.

The festival, held on 9-10 August 2025 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, brought together nearly 200 teams, each with eight to twenty paddlers, for two days of exciting races and performances. The event is recognized as one of the largest dragon boat festivals in the US, drawing close to 2,000 paddlers and over 40,000 spectators annually.

“We are honored to be the first Consulate General based in New York to participate in the NYC Dragon Boat Festival, which has become one of the country’s most celebrated multicultural sporting events,” said Consul General Senen T. Mangalile.

The NYPCG team was invited to join this year’s festival by Ms. Maisie Ho, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York. “As the founder and festival benefactor, we appreciate the Philippine Consulate General’s inaugural participation in the race, and we look forward to seeing the Filipino-American community join more cultural activities in future festivals,” she said.

Composed of personnel and family members from NYPCG and the Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the team was led by Deputy Consul General Adrian S. Cruz and Minister Noel M. Novicio. Veteran dragon boat racers Pasha Fernandez, Ka Yee Wong, and Lucas Wong served as trainers and coaches, guiding the team in preparation for the competition.

Dragon boat racing continues to grow in popularity across the United States, blending athleticism, teamwork, and cultural heritage. The NYPCG team’s debut at the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival underscores its commitment to fostering camaraderie, cultural exchange, and community engagement in New York’s vibrant multicultural landscape.
